Livestock: Ceftiofur Vet is used to treat bovine respiratory infections such as shipping fever and pneumonia caused by Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni. It is also effective against acute foot rot (interdigital necrobacillosis, pododermatitis) linked to Fusobacterium necrophorum and Bacteroides melaninogenicus, as well as uterine and reproductive tract infections (endometritis, postpuerperal or toxic metritis, and pyometra) caused by E. coli, Fusobacterium necrophorum, and Arcanobacterium pyogenes. Poultry: In day-old chicks and turkey poults, Ceftiofur Vet is indicated to reduce early mortality caused by E. coli infections.
Ceftiofur is a broad-spectrum, third-generation $\beta$-lactam cephalosporin antibiotic designed to resist degradation by $\beta$-lactamase enzymes. Effective against a wide array of Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, it operates by disrupting bacterial cell wall synthesis to achieve a bactericidal effect. An added therapeutic advantage is its primary active metabolite, desfuroylceftiofur, which retains significant antimicrobial efficacy against targeted bacteria.
