PABA (Para amino benzoic acid) is essential for bacterial growth & multiplication (synthesized by bacteria & supplied from environment). By different enzymatic process PABA is converted into Dihydrofolic acid at first & then Tetrahydrofolic acid. Tetrahydrofolic acid acts as a co-factor for single carbon metabolism & Nucleic acid synthesis. But due to structural similarity of PABA with Sulfonamides Dihydropteridin (essential for dihydrofolic acid synthesis) mistakenly combined with Sulfonamides instead of PABA. As a result Dihydrofolic acid synthesis is prevented. On the other side Trimethoprim prevents the formation of Tetrahydrofolic acid from Dihydrofolic acid. As a result bacterial DNA synthesis is prevented & bacteria are destroyed.

Cotrim Vet Sus. is a veterinary suspension containing Sulfamethoxazole / Sulphamethoxazole and Trimethoprim (100 mg/mL) from SQUARE.
For prevention, the recommended dose of Cotrim Vet Sus. in poultry is 0.33 mL/L, given orally, once daily for 3 days. 1 ml suspension / 3 Litre of drinking water for 3 days.
For treatment, the recommended dose of Cotrim Vet Sus. in poultry is 0.67 mL/L, given orally, once daily for 4-6 days. 1 ml suspension / 1.5 Litre of drinking water for 4-6 days (minimum 15 mg. per Kg body weight).
For treatment, the recommended dose of Cotrim Vet Sus. in calf is 0.2 mL/kg, given orally, once daily for 5-7 days. 10 ml suspension / 50 kg b. wt. daily for 5 - 7 days.
